Pittsburgh Pipe recently played a major role in assisting the Hudson Yard Project in Midtown Manhattan. Pittsburgh Pipe played a major role in providing caissons, a major component of the project’s foundation. In this article, we’ll take a look at the project overview, how Pittsburg Pipe helped, and provide a little bit more information about our quality steel caisson pipe.
The Hudson Yards Project Overview
Located above 30 active Long Island railroad train tracks, three subsurface Amtrak rail tunnels, and a New Jersey passageway for the Gateway tunnel, the Hudson Yards Project stands as the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States. These vital transportation assets, crucial to public and non-public New York systems, cannot be relocated. Consequently, the developers faced the task of progressing with the project while preserving the existing infrastructure underneath. You may wonder, how was such a feat accomplished?
The proposed approach by designers and architects involved constructing the expansive project on a raised platform, which would be built over the existing land use. The foundation of this substantial platform played a crucial role in the entire development. To support both the platform and the buildings constructed above it, a total of 300 caissons were employed. These caissons varied in diameter, ranging from three to eight feet, and were drilled deep into the bedrock at strategic locations between the existing railroad tracks. Once drilled, they were filled with concrete.

Pittsburgh Pipe’s Solution
Pittsburgh Pipe was a major provider of the 300 caissons used to support the Hudson Yards Project. Starting in 2014, we began manufacturing these caissons according to our client’s precise specifications. Many of these caissons feature turning slots, picking eyes, grout holes, and cutting teeth. The Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit remained fully operational throughout the project’s construction. Hudson Yards is expected to attract over 24 million visitors annually.
This site encompasses more than 17 million square feet of commercial and residential space, including five state-of-the-art office towers, over 100 shops, a variety of restaurants, approximately 5,000 residences, a unique cultural area, 14 acres of public open space, a 750-seat public school, and a luxury hotel with around 200 rooms. All these offerings will provide unrivaled amenities and convenient transportation access for residents, employees, and guests. This project would not have been possible without the support from Pittsburgh Pipe.
